It was our design intent to increase the
amount and size of glazing to improve views to the south,
west and north. While doing so we refurbished and increased
the depth of the verandahs and overhangs to block the sun’s
rays in the summer from entering and warming the interior.
A reconfiguration of the floor plan from
a duplex to a free-flowing open plan single family residence
necessitated adding a three story Arts and Crafts style staircase
with mahogany railings to connect the multiple living areas.
The master suite contains a two story master bath with a recreational
vessel whirlpool for two in the upstairs loft which features
some of the best views in the house. The gourmet kitchen is
open to the living and dining areas and is ideal for entertaining
within the “view drenched” great room.
Green Builder features include harvesting
roof rain water and taming a natural spring to create a water
feature that runs continuously and provides irrigation to
the xeriscape, all while solving a preexisting drainage problem.
The natural “stream” begins at the front entry
court and runs under the house and terminates in the lower
level loggia area. The constant flow of water provides a beautifully
soothing background to dramatic views and the outdoor activities
which the verandahs, loggia and porches are sure to invite.
The interiors throughout provided the general
contractor and his subcontractors an opportunity to exhibit
their considerable expertise in Arts and Crafts construction
detailing. Exquisite mosaics, tile work, cabinetry and carpentry
of the three story stairway are reminiscent of California
and Prairie Craftsman styles pioneered by Greene and Greene
and Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 1900’s.
